In his book "De prestatiegeneratie" (The Generation of Performance) neuro scientist and author Jeroen van Baar tries to find our where his compulsion to perform comes from. He takes a look at everybody of his generation, not only himself. Why does everybody in this age group want to reach the highest possible goals?
After reading this book, we had to make an animation, focussing on our generation. This generation of people born between 1980 and 2000 characterises itself with this complulsion to perform. Everybody wants to be the best and show how good their lives are. Social media, choices, influences by previous generations... Everything decided the way this genration shaped itself.
In Japan the working pressure is abnormally high. Japanse young adults sometimes work 14 hours a day, 6 days in a week. Thet simply do not have the time for a social life, a relationship or starting a family. Many Japanse adult in their twenties get depressedand that leads (way more often than in Europe) to suicide.
In my animation in focus on the high pressure in Japan. The young adults in the country of the rising sun are the best example of how extreme this compulsion to perform can escalate.
